Steps to maintain your Water Heater
Maintaining a solar water heater is essential to ensure it operates efficiently and has a long lifespan.
Here are some key steps to maintain your solar water heater:
1. Regular Inspection
Inspect the system every few months for any visible damage or wear. Look for leaks, cracks, or corrosion in the tank, pipes, and collector panels.
2. Clean the Solar Collectors
Clean the solar collectors regularly, especially if you live in a dusty area. Dust, leaves, bird droppings, and other debris can reduce the efficiency of the system. Use a soft brush or a hose to clean the panels.
3. Monitor the System Performance
Monitor the temperature of the water regularly. A drop in water temperature can indicate an issue with
the system, such as a problem with the heat exchanger, collector, or thermostat.
Check the flow rate
of the water. A reduced flow can signal a blockage or pump issue.
4. Check for Leaks
Regularly inspect the pipes, valves, and fittings for any leaks. Leaks can cause a loss of pressure, reducing the system's efficiency.Ensure the pressure relief valve is functioning correctly. It should release water when the pressure gets too high but not leak under normal operation.
5. Tank Maintenance
If your storage tank has a sacrificial anode rod (to prevent corrosion), check it annually and replace it
if it's significantly corroded.
Periodically drain a small amount of water from the bottom of the tank to remove any accumulated
sediment, which can reduce efficiency and cause damage.
6. Professional Servicing
Have a professional technician inspect and service the system annually. They can perform more detailed checks, such as testing the pressure, checking the pH levels of the heat transfer fluid,TDS level and ensuring the system is working at peak efficiency.
